An
MOUwas signed between the Saudi Food & Drug Authority (SFDA) and
the GS1 Saudi Arabia represented by Council of Saudi Chambers to
regulate
the trade of pharmaceuticals, medical supplies, food products and
pesticides within the Kingdom.
The
MOU was signed by Executive Vice President for Drug Affairs at SFDA Dr.
Ibrahim Al Juffali and Secretary General of the Council of
Saudi Chambers Eng. Khalid Al Otaibi. The agreement aims at joint
cooperation between the two sides in implementing global standards and
criteria that regulate the trade of the aforementioned products, whether
they are manufactured within or outside the Kingdom.
This includes implementing the GS1 global barcodes standards including
two-dimensional barcode (GS1 Data Matrix), serialization for drugs, and
linear bar codes on pharmaceutical, medical devices, food and pesticide
products.
This
step shall enhance efficiency in the sector as it unifies standards in
dealing with chain supplies and thus directly benefit societies
as it eliminates forged products, lowers medical risks, accelerates
patients access to right drugs and medical supplies and helps tracking
them if needed for inspection.
The
MOU additionally entails mutual cooperation and exchange of information
concerning issues of mutual concern to both parties, and providing
information regarding GS1 global standards in the healthcare sector. In
addition to organizing awareness programs for importers, agents and
manufacturers to instill the urgency of serializing products by sharing
successful experiences from other countries in
this regard.
It
is worth noting that the Bar Code system, which is implemented by GS1
Saudi Arabia is a global standard which offers high flexibility
in tracking products and providing information at selling points,
alongside being a main tool in e-commerce and exportation.
GS1
KSA has been formed by the Council of Saudi Chambers in 1999 after
joining GS1 International whose membership includes over 2.650.000
companies in 111 countries in the world.
